Where to get help

This section of the site will help you if you need advice on a maintenance problem, further information on historic materials or repair techniques, or assistance in finding a contractor.

Cadw is unable to provide advice on specific maintenance questions or to recommend suppliers or contractors.

There are, however, many sources of help available if you need guidance about building maintenance and the preservation of historic buildings. This is what you will find under the subheadings of this section.

Welsh local authorities – Your local authority’s building conservation or planning officer will be able to help you with questions about maintenance and repairs as well as listed building regulations, conservation areas and related matters.

Cadw – Information about Cadw, the historic environment service of the Welsh Assembly Government, and its work for an accessible and well-protected historic environment for Wales.

Heritage bodies and building preservation organizations – The national heritage bodies and building preservation societies provide valuable resources on the maintenance, sustainability and preservation of historic buildings.

Professional and trade organizations – The websites of these organizations often provide searchable directories for contractors or suppliers. Some of the trade organizations also furnish useful advice on materials and techniques.

Grants – Useful contacts if you need help to fund more major repairs to your historic building.

Welsh archaeological trusts – Get in touch with your regional trust if you are considering work that may disturb archaeological deposits or need information on archaeological matters.

Information on historic buildings – Starting points if you want to find out more about the history of your building.

Publications – Downloadable files of the Materials and techniques fact sheets and other useful publications.

Other useful links – A selection of useful and interesting sources of information relating to the maintenance and preservation of historic buildings.

FAQs – Answers to questions frequently asked by users of Maintenance Matters!

Before you contact anyone for advice, it will help if you make a note of your maintenance question. When advice is given, write it down for future reference. Always ask for the person’s name, phone number and email address if further contact is necessary.
